There are times during economic swings where supply is greater than demand. A certain product can be stuck in overflow while consumers have very little use for it. So they don't buy it.
The market for that product then becomes oversaturated, creating a discrepancy between demand and supply. This inadvertently makes the product less valuable.
I've been noticing lately that the content I consume doesn't necessarily have the “sting” that it used to. I used to read something or watch a quick video and be awed by the things I could learn in a couple minutes. There is no shortage of revelation, especially in a climate where I can just keep scrolling if I want to consume something else.
But I feel like the market is beginning to oversaturate. You can find anything you want, the moment you want it. It creates a time loop that keeps us engaged almost endlessly. But it feels a little exhausting.
And I realize how counterintuitive it looks to produce a piece of content that goes against the grain of content creation. The irony is real.
I'm also not one of those people who's going to champion this idea that we should get rid of social media and stay off our phones altogether. I'm human too.
What I will say is that it doesn't hurt to slow this thing down. I have several moments in a day where I catch myself in a blank stare watching some short video on my phone, only to look up and realize 10 minutes of my life just went by.
In a world that seemingly moves faster by the day, I’ll take any reason to put down the content and have a solitary moment.
Ultimately I’d rather just be present than catch another interesting fact about a praying mantis.
